Kanapaha Botanical Gardens is a facility of 62 acres maintained and operated by the North Florida Botanical Society, a private nonprofit educational organisation. Located in River's home town of Gainesville, Florida, the gardens include a self-guided walking tour that takes visitors to rock and humingbird gardens, through a medicinal herb garden and a Florida sinkhole.
Joe Saccocci, a Gainesville musician and friend of River's is the head gardener there. The year after River died, Joe received permission from the Board of Directors to build a wooden bridge in his honour. The bridge, which is situated in the arboretum was called "The Bridge On The River Koi" and it has a plaque that read's - "Built In Loving Memory Of River Phoenix By Joe Saccocci." (photo below)
The wooden bridge lasted about five years before it had to be replaced with a metal one.
