River as Lestat de Lioncourt (Interview With A Vampire) by Wycked
Another interpretation by Finalrice @ DeviantArt
When casting for Interview With A Vampire began, the book's author and screenplay writer Anne Rice expressed her wish to have River play the role of Lestat. Director Neil Jordan agreed, but they were eventually over-ruled by studio executives who wanted Tom Cruise. As a consolation, River was given the role of Mallory the interviewer instead. When asked about losing out on the role of Lestat, River said, "I don't like vampires all that much, It's good that they cast me as the interviewer in the sense that I can be pessimistic."
Most of the filming was finished by October 1993. River's scenes as Mallory were held back while he finished filming Dark Blood. River never got to film those scenes and the part was given to Christian Slater. Christian would later donate his entire fee to some of River's favourite charities. "That's the only way I could've done it," he said.
